Welcome!
My name is Mary Hovis and I provide bookkeeping services to small businesses, solopreneurs, the self-employed, and independent contractors.
I’ve found most small business owners don’t have a bookkeeping background like I do. That’s OK! I can help you make sense of your data and help you set up systems to simplify the financial side of your business. Maybe you look at your financial records and wonder how much cash do I have? And where is it going? Or is my business financially healthy? Can I afford to take this next step I’m dreaming of? Or maybe you read this and think “What systems?”

I have done many different jobs in my life. But there are common threads running through them all:
Customer Service….. Problem Solving…. & Curiosity.
Some of my back story….
My background started as I helped my Dad with bookkeeping at his CPA office, then doing taxes at H&R Block, a stint doing billing for a plumbing company, and as lead bookkeeper for a non profit. That was the first part of my career.
Then I went down a different road and ended up in the optical industry. I was looking for a change of pace and found a job making glasses in an optical lab. At this point in my life, I knew nothing about glasses-I didn’t even wear them! I have since worked in many aspects of the business from the lab to sales and eventually managing stores and doctor’s offices.
Interestingly, what brought me back to bookkeeping was helping my sister and her networking group get financial clarity around their businesses. It was then that I realized many small business owners struggle beyond the basics: Do you make make enough to save for retirement? What’s your overhead? Do you need a financial “diet”?
I found out I have the ability to clarify these complex issues into clear, concise language and to explain the relevance of the information. How great is that? I started Small Business Bookkeeping to help other business owners. That’s the clarity and expertise I will bring to YOUR business!
